Do Artists Really Wear Berets and Other Earthshaking Questions

So you know from Hollywood movies that  the typical artist garb is a smock with a beret. Why the beret, anyway? The smock is certainly understandable considering all the paint most artists typically sling around but is the beret a cliche? Where did it come from? Who made it infamous? Rest easy while  I attempt to answer these pesky questions that are waking you up in the middle of the night.
